  1. Talent is there but pace on ball reaction and movement way too sub standard. This present SE is seriously suffering from this syndrome and many teams have come to know this. SO GAMES AGAINST NIGERIA TEAMS ARE NOW BASED ON BEING QUICK TO MEET SECOND BALLS FIRST. Watching past generations SE especially 1980 and 1994 will help explain this huge problem in our SE and I see it our NPFL teams. WAY TOO SLOW.

  4. Fiorentina had an excellent team, but the circumstances were also in their favor. Lazio had lost the famous UEFA Cup final to Inter (in which R9 shone with the number 10 on his back) only a few days before this game, so they were tired and depressed, which was felt on the pitch and in the stands. A little earlier, they won the Coppa Italia, thereby ensuring participation in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, which they won the following season. I don't want to downgrade Fiorentina's win, but they competed practically only in Serie A unlike Lazio who played until the very end of the season on 3 fronts which resulted in a miserable form towards the end of Serie A when they won only 1 from a possible 21 points in the last 7 games.

In the first part of the championship, Lazio beat them away with Bokšić, Pancaro and Rambaudi (who were not present in this game), mostly because of the red card of Schwartz (who also did not play in this game) after a boxing punch to Jugović's head. And just a couple of seasons before that, Zeman's crazy Lazio won them 8:2!

In the next transfer window, both teams strengthened. Fiorentina had big ambitions but had to settle for third place in the league and expulsion from the UEFA Cup due to a fan incident, and Lazio produced one of the best bunch of players the world has ever seen, but lost the race for the scudetto by just 1 point thanks to a draw with Fiorentina in the penultimate round, although they were at the top most of the time. They made up for it the following season by winning the long-awaited Scudetto in another epic championship finish.

Serie A in those years was something truly special. I only realized that when it started to fail.

  5. Batistuta fortunately got to win the Serie A when he joined Roma. But Fiorentina 98/99 under Trapattoni was that team's greatest chance… Peak Fiorentina with Batistuta is more 90s than Mortal Kombat and JCVD movies!
